#9. An STD helps you heal.
When one hears you have the STD Hepatitis, it usually means you're sick. But the truth is HEP A B C are the only ones that really hurt you. And endanger your life if not treated properly. Studies of hepatitis came away with a surprising side effect of HEP G. It greatly reduced pregnant women's risk of passing HIV to their babies. And fought against HIV outright. It made researchers rethink exactly what HEP G was. First off HEP G doesn't have any negative effects on you. In blood transfusions, it's knowingly passed. After further studies, it was shown that this STD also reduced the death rate of those with the Ebola virus. Somehow, HEP G stimulated the host immune system. HIV/AIDS attacks and lowers the host's immune system. But with HEP G this combats that. So, if it can combat that, then it holds the key to combating anything that hurts our immune systems. Making us impervious to sickness. Betsy Foxman (University of Michigan) wondered what else is missing from our knowledge of the STD. This led to the name change of HEP G into GB virus C (GBC-C). Initial scientists say it infects white blood cells in a good way. Studies are continuing on how exactly it boosts immune systems. And if it is discovered, it can lead to helping fight all diseases. As well as boosting our immune system with everyday activity. But also, in treatment for people that need their immune system turned down.
More recently, GBV-C has also been linked to reduced mortality in those infected with the Ebola virus, somehow reducing the impact of the virus on its host. Understanding how could save lives.

#8. Liam - Super strength.
There is a medical condition that offers hope for folks that surfer with muscle loss. Liam Hoekstra seems like your average grade school kid. Except for the fact that he can bench press his mom. Born in 2005, Liam started to do an iron cross at the mere age of 8 months. By the time he was in his first P.E. class, he was doing chin-ups. All of this made his parents finally go 'wow'. After some doctor visits, he was diagnosed with muscle hypertrophy. Both his muscle and skeletal systems grow extremely faster and stronger than normal. All without any negative effects on his heart or any other body part. It doesn't matter what he eats, as it all turns into muscle. So he looks as ripped as an adult Stallone.
Another part of this condition is of study for weightlifters and doctors. Obviously, if muscles could grow no matter what, it would benefit the weightlifting community. If it can be discovered how to 'can' this ability, then people with muscle loss would benefit. Only time will tell how strong he ends up being by the time he's fully grown. The only downside is that his mom says he's hungry every hour!

#7. Fearless.
There is a medical condition that offers hope for people with PTSD. Urbach-Wiethe Disease is a non-life-threatening condition that can cause thickening of brain tissue. 1929 Drs. Erich Urbach and Camillo Wiethe first discovered this condition. People who had this in the amygdala of the brain showed a surprising side effect. One subject picked up snakes with her bare hands and stood up against an arm robber. Referred to as S.M. she was put to a series of tests, such as scary houses and horrific film scenes. None of which peaked the fear section of her brain. Which is also interesting because of the fact that women's brains respond so much stronger to horrific images. Other scientists and doctors are actually studying this condition in hopes of claiming down people with too much activity in the amygdala. Such as those suffering with PTSD.
6. Can't hurt him.
With wrestling and the NFL under doubt over head injuries, one man has the answers. Athletes need skulls that are twice as thick as normal. Gino Martino (real name John Ferraro) is famous for doing things such as smashing a nail into wood using just his forehead. Or a 9-inch nail through sheet metal. He can also bend coins with his head and a pair of pliers. His most famous move was headbutting concrete bricks. How does he do this you ask? He was born with a skull 16mm thick. Two and a half times thicker than anyone reading this. It all began as a kid when he smashed his head into a thick oak door while playing with his brother. He cracked the bolt and darn near knocked the latches off. What he has is different than Van Buchem disease. Which also causes a thick skull. But it causes blindness and other health problems. And so far, he doesn't have any 'concrete' diagnoses. But MRIs at the Harvard Medical School show his brain is still OK. He isn't brain damaged or just insane.
#5. Brad Williams is Google.
Memoryaholics to help those with memory loss! From Wisconsin, one man has been nick-named Mr. Google. That man is Brad Williams. Hyperthymestic syndrome is the proper name of his medical condition. The condition causes the memory section of the brain to process memory in great, inhuman detail. His own brother Eric joked that it's better to simply ask him about something than research it. Brad went on to be semi-famous as he had spots on TVs Good Morning America, Regis And Kelly, and 60 Minutes. But scientists are studying this condition as it could unlock some keys to helping those with memory loss.
#4. Sickle Cell defends Malaria.
A manageable disease can cure a deadly disease. Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic illness that negatively affects your red blood cell count. As it attacks your hemoglobin, which transports oxygen in your blood. Marek Cyrklaff, a German biologist, found something that the illness does. It can save your life in a poor country. Malaria is a parasite that Sickle's mutated hemoglobin actually fights it off. Malaria kills over a million people. Especially in poor countries, this kills people. Sickle Cell is far less dangerous and is more treatable. It's something that you can have a full life with. But Malaria is much harder to treat. And it can kill you within days.
#3. Lizzie - The key to never be overweight.
For folks with obesity (or laziness) the following might work for you. Lizzie Velasquez has such a rare condition that only three people are known to have it. She is unable to ever be overweight. In fact, she can never gain any fat. She's missing all of the adipose tissue. Which humans have under our skin that plumps up with body fat. Ever since she was born, she has been underweight. Doctor after doctor couldn't treat her condition, so she eventually just got tired of it. Other than being blind in one one she is completely healthy. She even eats every 30 minutes just to make sure she replenishes her strength. She is also so happy with herself that she has said that if a cure were found, she would refuse it. Doctors and scientists such as Dr. Atul Chopra, a medical geneticist at Baylor College of Medicine, are not only studying Lizzie to make sure she lives a healthy life. But it is also in hopes that this could be a key to helping folks with obesity.
#2. Up all night.
Chiari malformation means the lower part of your brain comes out of the skull and rest on the spine. There are several symptoms but one of the primary ones is sleeplessness. That's the story of Rhett Lamb as ABC news reported. In Vietnam, a chicken farmer has not slept 1979. Nguyen Van Kha one night closed his eyes but he had a burning sensation. He didn't tell his artillery division seniors. For fear he would be discharged from service.
Other than sunken eyes and bags under his eyes he's of perfect health. He lays down to rest at night, but he's always awake. Thai Ngoc of Vietnam contracted a fever in 1973, and he hasn't slept for longer than a nap since. Ngoc has been offered the chance to travel and see what condition he was but he's afraid to leave his village.
#1. Biba Struja AKA Battery Man.
Wouldn't it be nice if, as an electrician, you didn't have to worry about getting shocked? And you could cook your lunch on site, no matter where you are. The BBC Channel 4 documentary Man Vs. Weird broke the story of Biba Struja. Who can cook a sausage with his bare hands. He can also hold an electric charge with his skin. And he uses his condition for the good of man. As he runs an electrotherapy clinic for arthritis. Hailing from Serbia, doctors discovered he was born without sweat glands. And doctors say this is the condition that gives him these powerful side effects. Goran Marjanovic, an electricity expert, says it's because his skin lacks the amount of water that normal folks do. Again because of his lack of glands.
The only downside is that he has to be careful in the summer as he doesn't sweat to cool off. He's lucky because this really saved his life once. As a young man, he was working and grabbed a live wire that should have killed him. His co-worker, Sevage, was there and felt the shock but let go. While Biba just held it there. Other than no hair and discolored nails, he's healthy.
