Airheads, The Hard Rock Tribute To Famous Movies.
By Edtrader. March. 1st, 2023
Airheads is a 1994 film starring Brandan Frasier (Chazz) Steve Buscemi (Rex), and Adam Sandler (Pip). They are The Lone Rangers, a powerhouse rock trio. Whose only goal is to get their song on the radio. So, they bust into the local rock station, KPPX, and take the station hostage. What follows is a caper that went from three and a half minutes into a three-hour standoff. Which, if you watch such classic films as Dog Day Afternoon, you can easily see how this film borrowed from these famous movies.

#6. Dog Day Afternoon.
Al Pacino starred as Sonny in the 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon. Which turned a simple bank cash grab into a media circus. The Lone Rangers' radio station takeover also turns into a media circus.
Similarities:
A. Sonny and his partner planned this robbery, which should have taken ten minutes. However, they got the wrong information and arrived after the bank's money had been picked up. Not after it was supposed to have been dropped off by the armored truck company. Trying to cover their tracks, Sony burns the counter-register book. The trash cancatches on fire. The smoke of which catches the attention of the insurance broker across the street. Turning the whole deal into a crap-brick.
Airheads, all they needed was three and a half minutes, and then they were outta there. They came in prepared with a reel-to-reel tape of their song. However, the station doesn't have a reel-to-reel tape deck. The radio station is set up for CDs and cassettes only. Fortunately, a reel-to-reel tape deck is in the possession of another employee. It gets installed into the radio console, and the world gets to hear The Lone Rangers... Well, the first ten seconds anyway. But as bad luck would have it, the tape gets eaten up, catches on fire, and drowns in beer. Turning the whole deal into a crap-brick.
B. In the chaos of the plan going to crap, Sonny goes running around like crazy. Finally, the phone rings, with the cops on the other end. Sonny has the 'O Shit' moment.
When the tape goes up in flames, what is Rex's famous line? RUN! The three go running around like crazy. When they see the cops outside, they collectively have the 'O Shit' moment.
C. After a news report, hundreds of spectators come out to witness the bank robbery. Leaving the police with not only the robbers, but hundreds of screaming fanatics outside. As it turns out, Sonny is bisexual and even has a male wife. Once this news gets out, the gay community comes out in droves as well. So, you have the spectators as well as the supporters acting as cheerleaders.
In Airheads, once it's known a rock band has taken over the station, hundreds of metalheads come pouring onto the scene. This becomes important as both movies enact and utilize the crowds. Making them almost as big as the main characters. Chazz and Sonny become energetic leaders for the masses. Added to that is the fact that in both cases, the hostages become the biggest supporters of all. Even passing on chances to get free.

D. Sergeant Moretti (Charles Durning) has a few scenes where he talks with Sonny. You'd expect Morretti to be calm and professional. But with the crowds, Sonny's antics, and officers not following his orders, he loses his cool. Leading to this amazing scene where they both argue outside. Both were screaming 'what the fuck are you doing? like a redneck couple arguing on COPS. The two switch back and forth, going on the offensive against each other. Yelling and cussing back and forth for five tense minutes.
Chazz does the same with Det. O'Malley. Played by the first of the two Ghostbusters alumni, Ernie Hudson. After the cops cut off the electricity, Chazz comes out, and they too switch, going on the offensive. But with fewer F-bombs.
E. Chazz's lady has the only other tape of their song. So, the movie has a chasing down the 'female' subplot. Chris Farley's job in Airheads. Sonny wants his wife to come down. They do a 'switch-a-roux', and Sonny has a male wife. The male wife doesn't cause him that much of a headache. It's his female wife that causes his headache. While on the phone, she drives him crazy. Finally, he goes all crazy eyes: "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP". Chazz's girl comes in and starts on the 'how he is a moron' speech. He gives the same insane look: "YOU'RE DRIVING ME INSANE".
F. Now comes our second Ghostbusters alumni Harold Ramis. Who presents himself as a record executive. The band baits him into revealing that he's a cop. Cops couldn't pull the world over their eyes.
Dog Day Afternoon tries the same thing with a van driver. Sonny is able to trick the cop into revealing who he was. Cops couldn't pull the world over his eyes.
#5. Blues Brothers.
First, both movies are centered around crime. And secondly, how do both end? Live And In Prison!

#4. The Negotiator.
Just like in Dog Day Afternoon and Airheads, the hostages in The Negotiator become the biggest supporters. As they find out, Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) is innocent. So, all three films share this.
A major aspect of The Negotiator is that some of the cops are trying to kill Danny. For their own personal reasons. Danny takes over an office building to prove his innocence. Little does he know that a ring of cops is at the heart of the matter.

It's an insurance fraud that Danny's best friend blows the whistle on. Danny is then set to take the fall for his murder. So he overtakes the office of Inspector Terence Niebaum. In order to set things straight. Kevin Spacey plays the negotiator, Chris Sabian. He even picks up on how eager they are to kill the man. Which, the object is to save everyone's life.
Dog Day Afternoon an attempt is made to kill Sonny as well. As the detective tells Sunny, those Tactical Forces guys like to climb buildings and go through windows. They go behind his back and do this just to satisfy their need for action.
In Airheads, there is an attempt to kill the band as well. Swat team leader Mace wants the band wiped out. As one of them happens to be a pool cleaner. And who did Mace's wife sleep with? A pool cleaner. So, he sneaks around and tries to take them out using the character of Beech.

#3. Die Hard
In Die Hard and Airheads an inside guy and an officer bond together.
Die Hard's John McClane (Bruce Willis) is in an office skyscraper to visit his wife. But ends up crawling around in dirty air ducts. With his only support being Sgt. Al Powell. An office that is outside on the radio.

The same thing happens to Airhead's Beech (Michael Richards) and Mace (Marshall Bell). John McClane was in an area off to himself. So, the bad guys didn't see him. Giving him the chance to get away and into the air ducts. Beech is alone as well. Naturally, he ends up in the ducts. Both with a single lighter as their only light source.
John McClane and Al share some personal stuff as they get through this ordeal themselves. Mace and Beech get a little personal and bond together as well.

#2. Three Amigos.
The Three Amigos just want to be movie stars. And end up biting off more than they can chew. The Lone Rangers just want to be rock stars. And end up biting off more than they can chew. The groups are trios and wear ridiculous hats. What more could you ask for?
But they end up changing people's lives for the better.
The Three Amigos go to Mexico to film a movie that was supposed to be simple. But little did they know that when they got there, not only were they wrong, but they were also nearly killed. A girl from this little town of Santo Poco writes the amigos after seeing their film. Thinking it was real, she sent a telegram. Asking them to come down and save their butts. They get the telegram and read it as come down and film this movie.
El Guapo keeps raiding their village and does so again once the amigos arrive. Ultimately, they soon realize it's not a movie. First meeting, they coward off. But they come to their senses and actually defeat El Guapo. With the people of the town rising up as well. Leaving the town's people better off than when they got there.
The Lone Rangers go up against the bureaucracy of the music industry. The tyranny of record executives Who, like El Guapo, just comes in and raids music talent. The Lone Rangers must also come to their senses and face their El Guapo. Being told to shut up and lip-sync. Like the puppets the industry wants the three to be.
The Lone Rangers do win the day and make the station folk's lives better. Pip and Chazz's girlfriends get to live the rock n roll chic lifestyle. And Ian gets out of the dead-end radio industry and becomes their manager.

#1. Dawn Of The Dead.
1978's zombie classic Dawn Of The Dead has consumerism at its heart. Four people barricade themselves inside a shopping mall as they try to live with hundreds of flesh-eating monsters outside. While there, they discover the amazing world of consumption. So, this horrific ordeal turns into a party. Playing games and swimming in food, jewelry, and clothes. They forget that the real problem is just on the other side of the wall.
What better place to be locked in than a shopping mall filled with all kinds of goodies.
The Lone Rangers get lost in a world of consumption as well. Playing loud music and swimming in clothes, naked women calendars, band posters, and concert tickets. They forget that the real problem is just on the other side of the wall. On just the other side of the wall.
Where else could you find all of this than KPPX, their area's hard rock station.
